Femi Kuti - One People One World
Het was ondertussen alweer van het uit 2013 daterende No Place For My Dream geleden dat we Femi Kuti en zijn Positive Force nog eens de studio in zagen duiken, maar nu is dus eindelijk deze One People One World, een stevig afrobeatalbum dat de fans van het genre zeker niet teleur zal stellen. Maar op het album zijn net zo goed invloeden uit highlife, soul, r&b, reggae en andere Afrikaanse, Caribische en Afro-Amerikaanse genres te horen; niet meer dan normaal vindt Femi zelf, want: "When I was a boy, I listened to funk, highlife, jazz, folk songs, classical music and my father's compositions, so you will hear those things in the music, but everything on this record comes strictly from my heart and soul. Like Africa itself, afrobeat has endless possibilities within its structure. As we play live at The Shrine, the songs evolve, absorbing the energy of the audience. It's like painting, with the changing hues and tones of the dancers coloring the music. When we take it into the studio, you hear all of those influences moving together. On this album, I kept to my roots and let the music flow through me, without diluting it. I didn't think funk, or afrobeat, or anything else. If you hear something in the melodies, it may be there, but as a composer, I surrendered to the higher forces that give me this gift to play music and let it flow out of me.". Naast de vaste bandleden van Femi's begeleidingsband Positive Force is ook zijn zoon Omorinmade Anikulapo Kuti op dit album te horen: "My son, Made, is studying music in England at Trinity College, the same place his grandfather Fela Kuti studied, and played piano and bass on many of the tracks. His contribution brought an intimacy to the sessions. Having Made play with me, and give me advice on the arrangements, was lovely.".
Het album opent meteen met een knaller van formaat, Africa Will Be Great Again, dat meteen ook symbool staat voor de hoopvolle boodschap die Femi met dit album wil meegeven: "Yes, the music is more uplifting, more optimistic. I'm a father and I love my kids, so I want to give the younger generation a message of hope. Despite all our problems, we can create greatness in our lives!". Wie van stevige afro-funk houdt moet zeker Best To Live On The Goode Side eens checken, maar voor wie het liever iets rustiger heeft is er afsluiter The Way Our Lives Go (Rise And Shine), afrobeat meets r&b. Titelnummer One People One World, mag dan een wat halfzachte oproep tot wereldvrede zijn, Femi zou geen Kuti zijn als er in de tracklist ook geen stevige maatschappijkritische boodschappen te vinden waren: Dem Militarize Democracy is een scherpe kritiek op de politieke situatie in zijn thuisland Nigeria, waarbij Femi zelfs het noemen van namen niet schuwt, met Corruption Na Stealing maakt hij een duidelijk statement tegen de corruptie die in Nigeria zo tot het systeem is gaan behoren dat het zelfs niet meer als stelen beschouwd wordt, in E Get As E Be stelt Femi dan weer dat de opeenvolgende revoluties en burgeroorlogen in Afrika alleen maar het status quo versterkt hebben, en met Dem Don Come Again waarschuwt hij voor het misbruik dat vaak gemaakt wordt van religie ("They use religion and the word of God to do their bad bad things!"). Beter dan dit wordt afrobeat voor ondergetekende niet!
