AMMAR 808 - Maghreb United
Als de sound van deze Maghreb United van AMMAR 808 herinneringen oproept aan Targ van het Tunesische Bargou 08, dan is dat zeker geen toeval, want het brein achter dit project is opnieuw de Tunesische toetsenist Sofyann Ben Youssef. Voor dit project waarmee Sofyann naar eigen zeggen het muzikale verleden van de Maghreb wilde laten botsen met de toekomst, liet hij zich inspireren door de sound van de TR-808, een klassieke analoge drumcomputer van Roland uit 1980; een toestel waar de naam van de band eveneens naar verwijst: "As soon as you put on distortion, filters, samples, the 808 can shape the sound any way you want. I'm a big science fiction fan; I dream about it. This project is a way to try and build a possible understanding of the world and the musical identity of the world today. It puts everything in a futuristic frame that opens ways to reflect on the present. Experimenting is my way of doing things, and this project is an experiment about a possible future through music and video. The music on Maghreb United is the past with now and the future with now. I'm trying to weave threads from folklore and mythology into futurism. And I'm not necessarily projecting a positive image; from all we can see, things aren't going in the right direction. What I hope is that it will raise an alarm. It's an album that brings power and traditional music together.".
Dat Sofyann een sciencefiction fan is, mag natuurlijk niet helemaal verbazen, want George Lucas koos destijds natuurlijk niet zomaar voor het Tunesische Tataouine als locatie voor de scenes in 'Star Wars' die zogezegd op de woestijnplaneet Tatooine moesten plaatsvinden. Ben Youssef werkte voor Maghreb United samen met vocalisten uit Algerije (Sofiane Saidi), Tunesië (Cheb Hassen Tej) en Marokko (Mehdi Nassouli) en verwerkte zowel invloeden uit targ, gnawa als raï, waarbij hij naast de TR-808 ook gebruik maakte van het vervormde geluid van een gimbri (een luit-achtig snaar- en percussie-instrument uit de gnawa-traditie), gasba-fluiten en zokraoedelzakken. Zoals de titel van het album al aangeeft was het daarbij vooral de bedoeling om aan te tonen wat de Maghreb verbindt: "In the past the Maghreb was one huge region, yet very diverse within its borders. But today, the world keeps every person separated. The album isn't so much about a united Maghrebi region, but how we can connect while observing our differences - our differences are also our connection - and using them to unify as humans. This is an example of that.". Bezwerende retro-futuristische muzikale verkenningstocht van de Maghreb!
AMMAR 808 staat op 9 november samen met Auntie Flo, DJ Dziri en Young Mocro op het podium van de Vooruit in Gent in het kader van Huna Sounds!
