Bombino - Sahel
Vijf jaar na het gesmaakte Deran is de Nigerese Toeareg en gitaarvirtuoos Omara 'Bombino' Moctar terug met Sahel, waarvoor hij samenwerkte met de Welshe producer David Wrench en zich samen met zijn muzikanten tien dagen terugtrok in Studio Hiba in het Marokkaanse Casablanca. De titel van het album verwijst vanzelfsprekend naar de strook land die tussen de Saharawoestijn en de zuidelijker gelegen tropenregio het Afrikaanse continent van de Atlantische Oceaan tot aan de Rode Zee doorkruist.
Het album is dan ook bedoeld als een oproep tot solidariteit en eenheid in de verschillende landen in de regio en tussen de volkeren die er leven. Bombino: "Let's defend our people, because we are the same regardless of our geographical position. The general plight of the Tuareg is always on my mind, and while I've adressed it in my music alla long, I wanted to give it special focus now. Even though geographically the Sahara desert is our home, so many of the Tuareg people are denied or deprived of certain basic necessities throughout the region. This has been motivating me a lot in the types of songs I sing and why. I want to get people thinking about the Tuareg, to represent those people who haven't been represented. They really need a voice!".
Maar ook de liefde krijgt een plaats op 'Sahel', zoals bijvoorbeeld in het intieme Ayo Nigla, waarover Bombino zelf zegt: "This song is dedicated to a girl that I loved too much and to whom I had declared my passion but went ignored. I lived with this love in solitude, deep in my soul.".
Het levert wederom een hoogst aanstekelijk album op met opnieuw die "toeareggae-vibes" waarmee Bombino bekend geworden is, maar ook enkele meer intieme songs.
Bombino komt Sahel live voorstellen op donderdag 19 oktober in Cultuurcentrum Ter Dilft in Bornem en op vrijdag 20 oktober in Cultuurhuis Zwanenberg in Heist-op-den-Berg.
