Gao Hong & Kadialy Kouyate - Terri Kunda
Nadat de kora eerder al gekoppeld werd aan de piano (Omar Sosa & Seckou Keita), de harp (Seckou Keita & Catrin Finch), de accordeon (Ablaye Cissoko & Cyrille Brotto), de cello (Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Segal) en de kanklès (Solo & Indré), zorgt de samenwerking van de Chinese Gao Hong met de Senegalese Kadialy Kouyate deze keer voor een samenspel van de West-Afrikaanse harp met de Chinese pipa (soms ook wel een Chinese luit genoemd).
Voor Goa waren samenwerking zeker niet nieuw (zo experimenteerde ze in het verleden al onder andere met gospel, jazz, bluegrass, klezmer en pop), maar toch was de kora nog onverkend terrein.
Gao Hong: "I remember in one of my interviews, a reporter asked me which instrument have I not yet plated with? I immediately said: "The kora!". I have always been fascinated with the instrument, I wanted to learn about it, hear it in person, I was curious how it would sound alongside my own pipa.".
Van zijn kant was ook Kadialy Kouyate, een Senegalese kora-virtuoos geboren in de lokale griot-traditie, erop gebrand om zijn muzikale horizonten te verruimen. De twee kwamen voor het eerst in contact via een online Zoom-gesprek. Kadialy Kouyate: "From that first online encounter, there was a mutual feeling that our two instruments would work together. So, we began planning how we could put an album together in a spontaneous, improvised, and yet, composed way. The process was quite simple. We agreed that I would lead half the songs and that Gao would lead the other half. For my part, I came up with ideas based on my own musical backbone, and from that I allowed space for Gao to contribute in her own way.".
Gao nuanceert toch enigzins: "In the studio we started to realize that there were more challenges than either of us had anticipated. When I have played with other instruments, or artists, most are very melodic even though our scales are different, but with African music, so much of it is rhythm.".
Op Terri Kunda ("huis van vriendschap") duiken de twee muzikanten het ene moment in hun eigen tradities (Sun Rising is gebaseerd op een folkmelodie uit het zuiden van China en Fulani Blues is Kouyate's ode aan Kolda, een regio in het zuiden van Senegal met een dominante Fulbe-cultuur), om zich elders dan weer compleet te verliezen in improvisatie (Between Stars, volgens Gao ontstaan: "…as though we were stars aligning perfectly in the sky, filling hearts with wonderment and inspiration!").
De kora en pipa zijn vaak samen te horen, maar er was ook ruimte om te soleren, zoals in My Musical Journey, waarmee Gao haar vijftigjarige carrière als pipa-speelster in de kijker zet, en Kadialy's Luck.
Prachtig samenspel van twee instrumenten uit compleet verschillende culturen, of zoals Gao het zelf samenvat: "Our music will not just be Chinese or Senegalese, it will be a new form of world music that melds styles and sensibilities from two continents!".
