Bixiga 70 - Vapor
Voor het Braziliaanse Bixiga 70 heeft de periode van de COVID-19 pandemie, die in Brazilië zowat parallel liep met de bewindsperiode van de rechts-populistische Jair Bolsonaro, voor herbronning gezorgd. Een aantal bandleden beslisten om de band te verlaten en met de nieuwkomers ging ook een nieuwe muzikale wind waaien. Cuca Ferreira (baritonsaxofoon): "It's not just the next album, it's really different. It's a reset, like re-founding the band. With new people, we had to get to know them and create music together. They brought different colours and ideas.".
De afrobeat-invloeden die hun vorige albums kleurden zijn op Vapor zo goed als verdwenen, en in de plaats krijgen we de Afro-Braziliaanse sound uit Bixiga, de buurt in São Paulo waar de band thuis is.
Cuca Ferreira: "Bixiga has always been artistic, it welcomes immigrants, all the waves of migration. Former slaves lived here at first, then Europeans from Italy, and people came from the northeast of Brazil. Now it's Nigerians and refugees who arrive here. It's not by chance that samba flourished here, all these traditions coming together. The area is a beautiful mess!".
Muzikaal betekende dat bijvoorbeeld het keyboard van toetsenist en nieuwkomer Pedro Regada op Vapor een veel grotere rol kreeg toebedeeld. Opener Malungu, waarvoor de band ook de gerenommeerde percussioniste Simone Sou wist te strikken, is daarvan al meteen een mooi voorbeeld.
Cuca Ferreira: "We'd used traditional keyboards in the past… Hammond, Fender Rhodes, synthesizer. Pedro added other things from his region in the northeast of Brazil. Axé, of course, and genres from contemporary forró eletrônico, piseiro, and tecno brega, that have a very heavy keyboard sound.".
Vapor klinkt als een bruisend funky feestje en volgens Cuca is dat niet meer dan vanzelfsprekend: "We're a stage band, that's our natural habitat. A show has its own narrative and we tried to give that to this album!".
Bixiga 70 laat ons met Vapor (Portugees voor "stoom") letterlijk even stoom afblazen!
