Echoes Of Zoo - Collective Intelligence
Naar goede gewoonte liet Echoes Of Zoo zich ook voor deze Collective Intelligence weer inspireren door fenomenen uit de fauna. Zoals de titel al aangeeft is dat deze keer "collectieve intelligentie", zoals die kan waargenomen worden bij zwermen, kudden of vluchten vogels. Vertaald naar de menselijke soort, ziet Echoes Of Zoo het als een uitnodiging om onze eigen collectieve intelligentie meer te gebruiken om zo globale uitdagingen beter het hoofd te kunnen bieden.
Nathan Daems: "The collective intelligence that we're after is reflected in the music in a direct way, by the way we play together and how we function as a band. When we play together, we act as one. We can only be a good band if we display a form of sophisticated collective intelligence."
Ook in de titels van de nummers op het album verwijst Echoes Of Zoo opnieuw naar vormen van collectieve intelligentie. Zoals met Flock Logic, Whale Syntax of single Wolfpack Telepathy bijvoorbeeld, opgebouwd rond een Afro-Braziliaans kabila-ritme; een idee van drummer Falk Schrauwen.
Nathan Daems: "He has a big influence on our music. Before I asked him to be in this band, he was not a drummer, he was a percussionist and studied in Brazil, Ghana and Benin. He doesn't play like a drummer, but like a percussionist."
Voor opener Higher Level zocht de band dan weer inspiratie in Ghanese highlife en Malinese woestijnblues: "The title points to the sophisticated ways animals communicate and coordinate as one. We sometimes refer to it as telepathy, but that label says more about our own limits than what's actually possible in nature."
Het psychedelische Multicellularity is dan weer opgebouwd rond de Arabische maqam-toonstelsel. Nathan Daems: "Multicellularuty is also collective intelligence, like very cell is an individual system."
Nathan vat samen: "I find it important in this day and age to focus on the positive potential of humans. Mind-blowing things are really possible The only way forward is to start to act more as a collective. That's what evolution is trying to force us to do. Ad it's a good thing!"
En zo zegt Echoes Of Zoo in de acht instrumentals op dit album weer meer dan veel artiesten weten uit te drukken in hun songteksten.
