AMMAR 808 - Club Tounsi
Nadat hij voor het in 2020 verschenen Global Control/Invisible Invasion nog naar Tamil Nadu in India trok, keert de Tunesische producer Sofyann Ben Youssef aka. AMMAR 808 voor deze Club Tounsi terug naar zijn Tunesische roots. Deze keer was het de mizwad of mezoued, een populaire vorm van traditionele muziek uit Tunesië en Algerije, waarin typisch Noord-Afrikaanse instrumenten zoals de darboeka en de mizwad, lokale doedelzakken, worden gebruikt, die Sofyann's aandacht trok.
Deze muziek, ooit vooral verbonden met het Tunesische platteland en de arbeidersklasse, gaf een stem aan de onderdrukten, en werd lange tijd met minachting bekeken door de Tunesische elite.
Sofyann Ben Youssef: "These people were coming from all around Tunisia due to their economic situation. They were considered people from the ghettos, and they were discriminated against. This music was even banished from Tunisian TV for a long time. It evolved out of that stigmatisation and became something that actually speaks to all Tunisians, because it takes its roots from all available music in Tunisia."
Tegenwoordig wordt mizwad vaak gespeeld op bruiloften en andere feesten: "On the album there is a rhythm that keeps coming back. It's called fezzani and it's without contest the Tunisian rhythm par excellence. It exists only in Tunisia. As soon as we start the fezzani medley in wedding parties everybody's hands are in the air. It comes down to the dance floor. It's for the last part of the night when everybody's super-hot and getting all sweaty!"
Voor Club Tounsi koos AMMAR 808 bewust voor herwerkingen van een aantal van de bekendste mezoued-nummers: "I didn't want to be original in the choice of tracks, but rather in the emotional proposition. It was about choosing the tracks that have the most impact and represent perfectly this tradition. There's a reason why they stood the test of time."
Om dat te bereiken werkte Sofyann samen met een aantal lokale vocalisten. Mariem Bettouhami is een zangeres die, net als AMMAR 808, aan het Muziekinstituut van Tunis studeerde, Mahmoud Lahbib is een doorgewinterde vertegenwoordiger van de pure mezoued-traditie, en Brahim Riahi, eveneens afgestudeerd aan het Muziekinstituut van Tunis, heeft een achtergrond als soefizanger.
Het resultaat is wederom een bezwerend album waarop Tunesische folktradities naadloos overlopen in moderne elektronische beats, of zoals Soufyann het zelf graag samenvat: "I want to grab energies from the past, from the root of the music, and then project them to the future. It's like a bridging between places and times!"
Op 7 november komt AMMAR 808 Club Tounsi live voorstellen in de VK als onderdeel van het Listen Festival!
